It may not feel like it, but summer will officially arrive at 2:24am on Sunday and it has many asking where are those warm summer temperatures?
Sunday will see a chilly start to summer across Saskatchewan and Alberta thanks to a powerful system developing over Alberta and moving east. According to the Weather Network, the system will drop temperatures as much as 7 degrees to just 12C in Calgary on Sunday while Regina’s high will only be 14 to 16. Significant rainfall is also predicted on Sunday as part of this weather system moving through.
Meteorologists say the jet stream is staying south of Canada which is creating cooler, unsettled conditions across the prairies. However, the long range forecast is looking more optimistic thanks to a warm up period starting on Wednesday with a high of 23. Thursday is predicted to be 25 by Environment Canada. The warmer temperatures will be welcomed by farmers across the prairies who’ve had a late start to the seeding season and now need heat to spur on crop growth.
Not only will Sunday be the first day of summer, it will also be the longest day of the year. 16 hours, 26 minutes, and 56 seconds of total daylight is expected before the days start to get shorter by just mere seconds.
