June of 1988 was historically one of the hottest and driest recorded. Temperatures soared into the 40s, further baking the already parched soil.
Many areas of the province received less than half their average precipitation. The Prairie Drought, as it was dubbed, triggered staggering losses in crop production, while the hot, dry conditions provided the perfect recipe for dust storms.
