CUT KNIFE — A trial date has now been set for a man facing a first-degree murder charge related to a serious assault near Cut Knife.
John Whitecalf's judge alone trial is scheduled to begin June 21, 2027, at the Court of King's Bench in Battleford.
Police previously reported, on May 31, 2025, at approximately 2 a.m., Cut Knife RCMP received a report of a serious assault in a field off of Highway 40, east of Cut Knife.
Officers responded immediately and located an injured man, who was later pronounced deceased by EMS at the scene. He has been identified as 52-year-old Garnet Whitecalf from Sweetgrass First Nation.
An adult man was arrested at the scene.
As a result of the continued investigation, 41-year-old John Whitecalf, from Sweetgrass First Nation, is charged with one count, first-degree murder.
