SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN — Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement June 23 for much of southern Saskatchewan, as it says conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds.
The advisory is for the cities of Regina and Moose Jaw, and communities in dozens of RMs in southeast and south-central Saskatchewan.
"Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon across southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba," the advisory states. "There is an elevated risk for funnel clouds in this area, especially early on in thunderstorm development. The threat for funnel clouds will diminish early this evening."
These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms, Environment Canada said. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.
If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, Environment Canada said watches and warnings would be issued.
"Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous," Environment Canada said. "They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances."
The agency asked people to treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter, as they usually appear with little or no warning.
SaskToday will have updates as they become available.
