WEYBURN — It took a little longer than they would have liked, but the Regina Red Sox and Weyburn Beavers finally managed to make up some ground on the postponed games the two teams have on their Western Canadian Baseball League schedule.
After a planned doubleheader this past weekend was once again rained out, the Beavers took a 10-4 win in game one of a twinbill in Weyburn on Wednesday before Regina rebounded with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
Other Saskatchewan action saw the Saskatoon Berries extend their lead atop the East Division with a 19-12 win over the Medicine Mavericks and the Sylvan Lake Gulls roll to a 15-7 win over the Swift Current 57’s.
Weyburn 10, Regina 4
The Beavers did all their damage early in the seven-inning contest, scoring four in the second inning and adding another five in the third to build a 10-3 edge.
Ryan Dauphinee and Joe Madill accounted for the majority of Weyburn’s runs, with Dauphinee hitting a three-run double in the second and finishing with four runs batted in, while Madill had a double as his single hit in the third and ended up with three RBI. Hugh Montgomery crossed the plate three times, Jared Kramp was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Zach Raichel was the winning pitcher after allowing four runs on nine hits over five innings, Maddock Day had two innings of scoreless relief.
Jalen Meyers led Regina with a 2-for-4 outing that included a lead-off home run in the third and two runs while Jake Fowler was 3-for-4 and crossed the plate twice. Brady Bye also had three hits.
David Hensarling was the losing pitcher, allowing all 10 Weyburn runs on six hits and five walks in the first 2 ⅓ innings. Colton Bank was effective in relief, giving up only two hits the rest of the game.
Regina 4, Weyburn 2
Weyburn’s Logan Kinter carried a perfect game into the top of the sixth inning but hit lead-off hitter Lance Anderson with a pitch to see that opportunity fall by the wayside.
Two batters later Raine Kreklewetz broke up the no-hitter with a triple to score a pair of runs before coming around to score on a wild pitch, and the Red Sox had all the offence they’d need for the win.
That’s because Kris Hahn was almost as effective in his start for Regina, allowing a single run on six hits over five innings of work and striking out four.
Owen Mayencourt had a pair of hits for the Beavers, Daxtyn Brown and Trevor Dale scored their only runs.
Weyburn is now 8-10 on the season and are third in the East Division, five games back of first place Saskatoon. Regina sits at 8-11 and in fourth place, 5 ½ games back.
Saskatoon 19, Medicine Hat 12
The Berries got off to a fast start with four runs in each of the first two innings before scoring two more in each of the third and fourth and adding three in the fifth for a 15-4 lead at that point in the game.
They’d need almost all of those runs, as the Mavericks put up plenty of offence of their own but couldn’t manage to complete the comeback.
Gael Salinas led the Berries offence with a 3-for-5 outing that included a home run, four runs scored and four runs batted in, while Josh Henson also had a homer among his three hits, scoring a pair of runs and knocking in four. Brock Laird was 3-for-3 with four runs, Ethan Murdoch, Gavin Panks and Erik Aguirre all scored two runs apiece.
Carson Chan went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs and four RBI for Medicine Hat, while Carter Roth hit a pair of doubles and scored three runs. Frankie Giacalone hit a round tripper and crossed the plate four times, Johnny Vulcano had three hits and three RBI. Blake Dale went 3-for-6 with two.
The less said about the two teams’ pitching the better, but Colin Plain picked up the win for Saskatoon despite allowing a pair of runs in his single inning of work through the fifth and sixth. Medicine Hat starter Brandt Spencer was the losing pitcher after allowing eight runs on six hits in the first 1 ⅔ innings.
Saskatoon improves to 14-6 and are now 1 ½ games clear of the Moose Jaw Miller Express for first in the East, Medicine Hat falls to 9-14 and are in fifth place, 6 ½ games out of first.
Sylvan Lake 15, Swift Current 7
The Gulls held an 8-7 lead through the first five innings and managed to put things away late, scoring three in the seventh and adding four more in the ninth to finish off the win.
Elias Duncan went 3-for-5 with a double, four runs and two RBI for Sylvan Lake, while Charlie Collings was 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI. Maddox Shaver also crossed the plate three times while Coleman Parry knocked in three and Bryce Turner went 2-for-5 with two runs.
Jake Hiromoto hit a two-run home run for Swift Current in the third and had a pair of runs scored, Malachi Jaramillo was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs.
Jordan Clarke started for the Gulls and allowed three runs on four hits over four innings, George Hobbins picked up the win after taking over in the sixth and pitching three scoreless innings, allowing a single hit and striking out five.
Koufax Cranmer started for the 57’s and took the loss after giving up eight runs, six earned, on six hits in 3 ⅓.
Swift Current falls to 5-13 and are sixth in the East, eight games back of Saskatoon, Sylvan Lake improves to 13-6 and are two games back of Okotoks for first in the West.
