ESTEVAN — Members of the Estevan Police Service (EPS) responded to a variety of calls around the city in recent days.
EPS officers were dispatched to separate domestic disturbances in east and central Estevan during the June 24 day shift. The EPS said each matter was mediated upon police arrival.
An erratic driver was reported on King Street during the night shift, but the EPS said members were tied up on other calls for service. A licence plate for the vehicle was obtained and follow-up with the registered owner will occur.
A bicycle was reported stolen in the Centennial area. The EPS said the item was recovered at a location a short distance away and the matter remains under investigation.
Police were notified of damage to buildings on the rodeo grounds, along with information that it appeared someone was living in a tent on the property. Members attended and located two individuals staying in the tent. The EPS said both were advised that they could not remain at that location.
While on patrol June 25, EPS members located and arrested a man who was wanted on a warrant for assault from the Regina Police Service. The EPS said he was processed and released on an undertaking with a court date in Regina to speak to the matter.
A traffic stop conducted during day shift resulted in a driver being issued a three-day driver’s licence suspension and three-day vehicle impoundment after the EPS said he performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests.
Police and the Estevan bylaw officer responded to a report of a woman bit by a dog. The EPS said the animal was located and brought to the Estevan Humane Society for observation while the investigation is conducted.
A request came in for a well-being check on an elderly couple. The EPS said members attended and with the assistance of EMS, determined the couple was safe and well.
A suspected fraud was reported by family members of an individual, related to services he had paid for. The EPS said the matter remains under investigation.
While on a separate call for service, EPS members observed a female youth who was failing to abide by court ordered conditions. She was arrested, charged and released, and the EPS said she will appear in Estevan Youth Court to speak to the charge.
EPS members responded to a report of a naked man behaving inappropriately in public and gesturing to drivers near the train trestle bridge in west Estevan. Members attended the scene immediately and conducted foot and drone patrols, the EPS said, but were unable to locate the man.
A request for a well-being check was received from the RCMP regarding one of their investigations. Members located the individual, the EPS said, and confirmed that the person was safe and well.
Multiple compliance checks were conducted on individuals bound by court-ordered conditions. The EPS said all those checked were found to be following their conditions.
Police received a report June 26 of an assault in the Trojan area. According to the EPS, a suspect and vehicle description were obtained and the matter remains under investigation.
EPS members attended to a domestic disturbance reported in the Valleyview area and mediated a resolution between the parties. The incident was a loud argument in which the EPS said no physical violence or threats occurred.
Police attended to the emergency department at St. Joseph’s Hospital for an intoxicated man who was reportedly acting abusively towards staff. The EPS said he was arrested for public intoxication and lodged in EPS cells until sober.
EPS received a report of a fight at a bar in central Estevan. On arrival the EPS said it was determined that a patron had been asked to leave, and when staff attempted to escort him out of the premises, he assaulted them. Staff declined to have charges laid in the incident and as a result, he was arrested for public intoxication and charged with remaining in a licensed establishment after being asked to leave. He was lodged in EPS cells until sober.
Multiple compliance checks and authorized searches were conducted on individuals bound by court-ordered conditions during the night shift. All those checked were found to be in compliance with their respective conditions and nothing of concern was located during the searches.
A June 27 alarm at a business in the Pleasantdale area was investigated and determined to be unfounded, as it was caused by staff on scene.
A report of a possible break and enter to a residence was received by the EPS. On arrival, the EPS said members determined that the individual on scene was conducting renovations at the request of the homeowner and no incident had occurred.
A complaint of a fire in a backyard was investigated, and the EPS said it was determined that the resident did not have the appropriate fire permit. He was advised of the complaint and the requirement to have a permit in place prior to having a fire on his property. The fire was extinguished.
EPS members assisted to locate an individual who resides in a long-term care facility and had walked away from the building. He was escorted back without incident and returned to the care of staff.
Police responded to several different reports of vehicles driving erratically in the city. In each instance, the EPS said members responded to the areas immediately following the complaints but were unable to locate the vehicles.
Police conducted compliance checks on several individuals bound by court-ordered conditions. All those checked were found to be in obeying their respective conditions, the EPS said.
During a night shift traffic stop, a driver was observed to show signs of impairment and admitted to recently consuming cannabis. The EPS reported roadside oral fluid sample was obtained and analyzed, and confirmed THC was present in the driver’s system. As a result, the individual was issued a 60-day driver’s licence suspension and a three-day vehicle impound.
Following a report of a hit-and-run collision in the city centre area earlier in June, the EPS said surveillance video was obtained that identified the vehicle responsible. EPS members contacted the registered owner and determined the identity of the driver, who was subsequently charged with driving without due care and attention.
EPS members assisted to keep the peace June 28 while property was exchanged between two individuals. No issues occurred during the exchange.
EPS received a report of an SUV that was vandalized while parked overnight in the northwest corner of the Black Grasshopper parking lot. Multiple scratches were observed on numerous surfaces of the vehicle when the owner returned to retrieve it the following day. A report of several youths damaging trees near a school in the Valleyview area was received. The EPS said members attended, spoke with a large group of children and cautioned them about breaking branches off the trees.
