ESTEVAN — A southeast Saskatchewan man will spend the rest of his conditional sentence order (CSO) in custody after multiple breaches.
Zachary Christopher Hillis had his CSO terminated July 3 in Estevan Provincial Court. During his appearance it was noted he had 553 days left to serve on the sentence. A CSO is described as a jail sentence in the community.
He was in Estevan Provincial Court June 29 to answer to a June 21 charge of breaching his CSO by failing to come to the door of his approved residence when asked by a police officer. The charge said the officer was checking the residence and curfew conditions of the CSO, following an alert by an electronic monitoring device. At the time, the Crown said it was opposed to Hillis' release, and he was going to need a show-cause hearing to be released from custody.
The matter was adjourned to July 3, when Hillis already had a hearing scheduled for a previous CSO violation.
Background: Hillis received a 20-month CSO and 18 months of probation, as per the terms of a joint submission, on March 5. He was supposed to stand trial on a number of charges and speak to others that day, but a global resolution concluded his matters.
He pleaded guilty to one count each of fraud; assault; knowingly possessing a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition without authorization; breaking and entering a place and committing an indictable offence; possessing, using or trafficking in a credit card, or a forged or falsified credit card; and violating a probation order; and five counts of violating release conditions. Numerous other charges were stayed.
Among the clauses of the CSO was a 24-hour curfew in which he was confined to his residence, unless he had written permission of his supervisor or designate.
