Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has spoken about the turmoil in the U.S after the death last week of a Minneapolis African-American man at the hands of police.
At his pandemic update in Ottawa, Trudeau said meaningful action needs to continue to end racism.
“The status quo where people face violence because of the colour of their skin is unacceptable,”Trudeau said. “No parent should have to explain to their kids that they or their friends might face racism, it is time, it is past time for this to change,” he added.
A Montreal anti-racism protest demanding degenerated into clashes between police and some demonstrators Monday night.
Protests in Vancouver remained peaceful.
Meanwhile the Prime Minister also announced that the government is making $2.2 billion available through the gas tax fund.
“Normally municipalities receive these payments in two installments, but we know that cities and towns need this money right away, that’s why we’re making the full 2020/21 payment available now,” Trudeau said.
Letters have been sent to all provincial and territorial leaders to outline how the process will unfold.
