REGINA — A coach who claims he was awarded the University of Regina Cougars women's basketball head coaching job has now filed a lawsuit against the school.
Jordan Webb, who recently signed as a lead assistant coach for the University of Victoria women’s basketball program, claims he and the U of R had entered into a three-year deal in mid-April for their head coaching position, according to a statement of claim filed on June 29 with the Court of King’s Bench in Regina.
The alleged contract would have begun on May 15, 2026, and ended on May 14, 2029. Webb would have been entitled to receive nearly $82,000, plus an adjustment to his salary, an expense allowance, and compensation for moving.
In a statement from the U of R, the school says it’s aware of the filing, adding, "it would be inappropriate to comment on pending legal matters.”
In the filing, Webb's lawyer, Martin Sheard, said Webb earned the position fairly through a merit-based competition for the role.
Around the same time as Webb’s alleged signing, the school faced backlash for not considering hiring its interim head coach, Michaela Kleisinger, with sources stating an internal coach had been hired.
After the departure of long-time head coach Dave Taylor, Kleisinger recorded a 17-3 record as interim head coach.
After receiving backlash for days, the U of R reversed its decision, reinstating Kleisinger as the Cougars women’s basketball head coach.
In the court filing, Sheard described the decision to terminate Webb’s alleged contract to hire Kleisinger as being driven by “political, personal and/or gender related” reasons.
Webb is seeking punitive damages, costs and interest from the U of R.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
The U of R now has 20 days to respond to the claim.
