BATOCHE – The last-minute pieces are being put in place for Back to Batoche Days 2026 from July 16-19.
The opening ceremony is July 17 with the grand entry at 10 a.m., followed by opening remarks, during which the inaugural president’s medals will be presented and Mr. and Mrs. Batoche will be introduced.
“These awards are something I’ve thought about bestowing on citizens for a long time. I’m very proud we’re now at the point where we can recognize dedication to community, fellow citizens and our government,” said Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) president Glen McCallum.
“The president’s medals will be awarded annually at Batoche to deserving individuals.”
Other features of the festival are fiddling, jigging and Batoche Idol competitions; chuckwagons, chariots and Indian relay; Louis Riel Cup slo-pitch; Métis artisan and food market; Voyageur Games; and harvest processing demo and feast.
“Following every festival, we listen to what our citizens liked, what didn’t work, and try to make adjustments that will satisfy our ever-growing audience,” said McCallum.
“For example, our language team is bringing back the Michif tent but this year will showcase all languages; Northern Michif, Heritage Michif and Michif French, and there’s a new family game that will be tested during the festival.”
Roblox is an interactive computer game that has specifically been designed to educate young and old about Métis culture, language and tradition. Working directly with Maskwa Games, the MN–S Education team has set the first one at Batoche itself. Little ones are encouraged to bring the rest of their family and test it out.
On the main stage this year, a complete lineup of Saskatchewan artists with a special edition of kitchen party featuring J.J. Lavallee, Jason Lepine (MB) and Donny Parenteau.
Some new additions to the Vermette Raceway this year, the mounted target shooting competition and flat races. A Métis tradition, the Indian relays, are back, along with the fan favourites CPCA and North West wagon races.
The procession to the Batoche cemetery starts to wind down the festival on July 19. There are daily shuttles from Saskatoon and Prince Albert.
