REGINA — Former Regina Police Service (RPS) chief Farooq Sheikh says his dismissal was unwarranted.
In a statement provided on his behalf by his lawyer, Sheikh's legal team said an upcoming appeal in September will prove his termination was unjustified and wholly disproportionate.
“The process leading to his dismissal fell short of the principles of fairness and due process that should underpin decisions of this nature.”
Sheikh was fired by Regina’s Board of Police Commissioners in October after a Public Complaints Commission investigation found he had texted a board member about his contract during a meeting he did not attend.
Shortly after his dismissal, the RPS appointed Lorilee Davies as the new chief.
After his firing, the statement said, Sheikh and his family have had extreme difficulty.
As part of the appeal, Sheikh is seeking to ensure every aspect of the case can be reviewed.
“[He] welcomes the opportunity to have all of the relevant facts examined through an independent and impartial appeal process,” although he won’t be making any comments on evidence.
Despite his dismissal, Sheikh's legal team said he is grateful for the opportunity to work alongside his colleagues and members of the community to bring positive change to Regina.
"He is equally proud to have worked alongside so many exceptional police officers, civilian staff, and community partners in strengthening public safety, advancing crime prevention initiatives, and ensuring the Regina Police Service remained fiscally responsible.”
