REGINA — Two people are facing charges after a weapons incident left a woman injured and a responding police officer assaulted.
On Saturday, July 11, at approximately 7 a.m., officers were called to the 800 block of Elphinstone Street for a report of a weapons offence involving a knife, and the first officer on scene conducted a traffic stop on a taxi in the 1100 block of Elphinstone Street. The officer approached the vehicle to speak with the female passenger believed to be involved in the incident, and while the officer was speaking to her, a man approached the officer in what police describe as a threatening manner.
Police say the officer directed the male to sit down until he was finished speaking with the woman, but he did not comply. The officer then informed him that he was under arrest for obstructing an investigation and attempted to take him into custody. Police say the suspect resisted arrest and assaulted the officer. Additional Patrol units arrived on scene and officers took the male into custody. The officer who was assaulted was assessed and treated for minor injuries.
Investigation determined that the incident stemmed from an altercation that occurred approximately one hour earlier at a residence on Rothwell Street. Witnesses told officers that a woman, later located by officers in the taxicab, arrived at the residence and knocked on the door. When a 36-year-old female answered, she was stabbed by the female suspect, who then fled the scene. Following the incident, the victim and the man who was later arrested for assaulting a police officer left the residence on Rothwell Street for another residence in the 1100 block of Elphinstone Street. A short time later, the 31-year-old female suspect arrived at that address where a second altercation occurred involving the female suspect, the victim and two other individuals.
Police were called a short time later. The 36-year-old victim was taken to hospital by EMS to be treated for what appeared to be a minor stab wound.
All involved were known to each other, say police.
As a result of this investigation, a 31-year-old woman is charged with:
- Assault with a Weapon; and
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order.
A 40-year-old man is charged with:
- Assault A Peace Officer; and
- Obstruction
They will make their first appearance on these charges in Regina Provincial Court on Aug. 31.
