REGINA — FIFA World Cup fans in Regina can watch the final match between Spain and Argentina at an outdoor watch party.
The watch party will kick off on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the grounds of Queen Elizabeth II, inside the Wascana Centre, located at 405 Legislative Drive, according to a news release. The game itself between the two teams will begin at 1 p.m.
Entrance to the event is free, with limited seating available. People attending are encouraged to bring their own seating and blankets.
The game will be shown on a large screen, with food vendors, family-friendly activities and entertainment throughout the day.
The idea for the party came from Ward 6 Coun. Victoria Flores, who wanted the whole city to experience the buzz of a FIFA match from her own personal experience
“[I wondered what] if the whole city could feel that, too? A few phone calls later, and thanks to an incredible group of community organizations, businesses, and volunteers, it's turned into something the whole city gets to be part of. Regina shows up when it matters, and this is one more example of that,” she said in a release.
Several organizations, including Regina Open Door Society, Summer Bash YQR, Good Morning Project, Saskatchewan Community Foundation, and Access Communications, came together to organize the watch party.
The event will bring together different backgrounds and soccer traditions all in one place.
“I believe that the game of soccer is continuously growing and there’s no better place than Regina. We have such a diverse community from all backgrounds, and the beautiful game is something that brings us together. This event is perfect for uniting that community”, said Kairo Holness, one of the event organizers.
The watch party runs until 5 p.m. on Sunday.
