REGINA — The RM of Sherwood is seeking outside communications support to improve public engagement and help council make more informed decisions.
A request for proposal has been issued for the RM seeking communications support services, including improving clarity and consistency of communication, providing strategic communications advice, and increasing its digital presence.
“I feel that the RM of Sherwood is lacking and doesn't have great communications in the sense that we're not getting the message out to the general public,” explained interim reeve Ray Orb.
Orb said the lack of communication meant the public only became aware of Bell’s proposed data centre through RM documents released in February, with the project receiving approval just two months later in April.
“It was clear the general public was not aware of what was going on,” said Orb.
While the general public lacked information, Orb assured stakeholders that they received proper consultation.
“The RM of Sherwood property owners are very informed, and they're very cognizant of the fact of what's going on with the development right now. They were part of the consultation.”
One key issue Orb mentioned was that he and other members of council were appointed by the province shortly before the RM approved the development agreement with Bell, after several former members of council resigned.
“We had to basically do our own research to find out what was going on with the development, and that is something no councillor should endure.”
To improve information and understanding of community responses, the RM is looking to start open houses for projects and attract new local politicians.
“We're looking at attracting people, basically new councillors and reeves, to get them in and to get the message out there how important this job is.”
While not singling out any individuals, Orb said previous councils have been hesitant to take on the full workload required of the position.
He said getting this information out is necessary for the upcoming municipal election in November.
Information for the RM will also be presented through a newsletter on its website, and online surveys for developments may also be possible, said Orb.
