ESTEVAN — The city of Estevan's crime severity index (CSI) number increased slightly in 2025, despite a homicide in May 2025 that would have weighed heavily on the figure.
Data released by Statistics Canada on July 22 showed that the CSI for the area patrolled by the Estevan Police Service was at 97.93, up 3.39 per cent from the 94.72 recorded the previous year.
The violent crime number stood at 129.78, up 14.22 per cent from the previous year's 113.62.
The non-violent CSI was at 86.03, down 2.19 per cent from 87.96 in 2024.
Meanwhile, the CSI for the area patrolled by the Estevan RCMP stood at 77.2, down 13.84 per cent from the 89.6 recorded in 2024. The violent crime figure was listed by Statistics Canada at 21.41, a 72.51 decrease, while the non-violent crime number was at 100.16, which was a 5.39 per cent increase.
In the Carlyle RCMP's detachment area, the CSI for 2025 was 99.49, down 35.61 per cent from the 154.51 recorded in 2024, when two homicides were reported in the Carlyle RCMP's region.
The 2025 figure is the lowest CSI number for the Carlyle area since the data was first track for the ddetachment in 2003. The previous low was a 107.58 in 2014.
The violent crime CSI for Carlyle was 96.04, down 62.29 per cent from the 264.67 in 2024. Non-violent crime was 101.71, down 12.16 per cent from 115.79 in 2024.
The Carnduff RCMP detachment area was at 62.72, a 0.93 per cent increase from 62.14 recorded in 2024. The violent crime rate was 56.07, up 10.59 from 2024. The non-violent crime rate was 65.90, down 1.99 per cent from the 67.24 in 2024.
The CSI is calculated by multiplying the number of police-reported incidents for each offence by a standardized weight, adding the weighted crimes together, and dividing the total by the local population, then standardizing it against a national baseline.
