This past weekend saw heat warnings spread across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba thanks to temperatures in the low to mid 30’s for several days. Meanwhile, it’s a completely different story in Canada’s far north.
Alert, Nunavut is on pace to have one of its snowiest July’s on record. The Ellesmere Island community has had over 17cm of snow so far in July making it the snowiest month of the year. On average they get about 12.8cm of the white stuff, but this year seems to be the exception.
While it may seem odd to have this much snow in July, it’s actually not completely uncommon. Since 1950, the military settlement has seen this much snow or more in July 17 times, the most recent being 2018. According to the forecast, more snow is still on the way for Alert before July comes to a close.
Alert is a Canadian Forces base on Ellesmere Island and is considered the most continuosuly inhabited northern community on Earth. Residents tyipcally live on the base for three to six months before a new crew replaces them.
