Man convicted in federal court of hitting protected birds with truck
A 19-year-old Huxley man has been convicted in federal court after prosecutors say he intentionally struck and killed two Canada geese with his truck in Ankeny earlier this year.
A federal magistrate judge in Des Moines on Thursday found Wyatt Christian Greenfield guilty of violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
Canada geese are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a federal law that prohibits the unauthorized taking, killing or possession of protected migratory birds.
Greenfield faces a maximum sentence of six months in prison, five years of probation, one year of supervised release, and a $15,000 fine.
A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
