SASKATOON — Saskatoon police have charged a 24-year-old man from Winnipeg following an assault involving a machete in Riversdale that was followed by a police chase and a crash.
According to Saskatoon Police Service, at around 11:15 p.m. on July 29, police were called to a report of an assault in progress in the 800 block of Avenue O South. It was reported that someone had been attacked with a machete. When officers arrived, they located the male victim suffering from non-life-threatening injuries consistent with a machete attack.
Through their investigation, officers learned that a confrontation had occurred between parties known to one another resulting in the victim being injured. Multiple persons dispersed from the scene prior to police arrival.
Approximately five minutes later, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area without a visible license plate. When police activated the vehicle’s emergency equipment, the vehicle didn’t stop and fled at a high rate of speed. Officers disengaged from the pursuit.
Later, shortly before 12:30 a.m. on July 30, police were called to a single vehicle collision in the area of 71st Street East and Arthur Rose Avenue. Officers located a lone male driver next to a heavily damaged car.
Through their investigation, officers determined he was the same suspect who had evaded police earlier and was also believed to be present during the incident involving the machete.
As a result, the 24-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with evading police and dangerous driving.
Police say they are continuing to investigate the assault.
