ESTEVAN — A motorist is facing multiple charges after members of the Estevan Police Service (EPS) conducted a traffic stop, due to what the EPS described as “concerning driving behaviour”.
According to the July 31 EPS report, the driver displayed signs of impairment and was subsequently arrested after performing poorly on roadside testing and a drug recognition expert's evaluation. The EPS said a search resulted in the seizure of suspected methamphetamine and fentanyl.
The driver was charged with impaired driving and possession of controlled substances, the EPS said. The vehicle was towed, and the accused was released to appear in court at a future date.
That same day, a hit-and-run collision was reported, the EPS said, and remains under investigation.
The EPS assisted with a well-being check after concerns were raised regarding a resident who was unable to respond to caregivers at their door. The EPS said police attended the residence and located the individual alive but requiring medical attention. Estevan EMS attended and transported the individual to hospital for further assessment.
EPS members concluded a fraud investigation in which the EPS said the suspect had received payment for services that never occurred. As a result of the investigation, the EPS said an Estevan woman was arrested and charged with fraud under $5,000 and breach of trust. She was subsequently released and will make a future appearance in Estevan Provincial Court to speak to the charges.
A complaint came in of a domestic disturbance in which one of the parties had been locked out of their residence. The EPS said members attended, mediated a resolution and no further issues were reported during the night shift.
A report was filed of a man trying to fight with patrons at a local bar. The EPS said the man was located on the premises and found to be grossly intoxicated. He was arrested for public intoxication and lodged in cells until sober.
According to the Aug. 1 police report, the EPS is investigating an online sextortion complaint involving a youth who was threatened after sending an intimate image. No money was sent in response to demands to do so and the the EPS said an investigation is ongoing.
EPS members arrested a man for breaching court-ordered conditions after he was found consuming alcohol. During the arrest, the EPS said the man attempted to flee and was later found to be in breach of additional conditions. While being lodged in cells, the man reportedly made multiple threats to kill police officers and was subsequently charged with uttering threats. He was remanded in custody to appear in court to speak to all of the charges.
Police also responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at an apartment building. The EPS said officers determined the matter was verbal. The parties were separated, support was provided and no charges were laid.
Three girls were reported to be breaching court-ordered conditions of having no contact with each other. The EPS said members located all three together in the yard of a residence, and they were arrested without incident. As a result of repeated similar breaches, two of the girls were remanded to appear in court and the third was released and will appear in Estevan Youth Court at a future date.
The EPS received another complaint Aug. 2 of an attempted sextortion after a local youth sent intimate photos to an individual. After sending the images, the youth was ordered to send money or the photos would be released to family members. No money was sent, the EPS said, and the matter remains under investigation.
Police are also investigating allegations of criminal harassment and unlawful entry into a dwelling, following reports of ongoing unwanted contact, and an incident in which the suspect entered a residence without permission and left prior to police arrival. The EPS said attempts to locate the suspect following the report were unsuccessful and the matter remains under investigation.
A complaint came in of several youths jumping on the sign of a local business and throwing shopping carts around the parking lot. The EPS said members attended and spoke with the youths who were cautioned about their behaviour prior to returning the carts to the designated areas.
Two lost wallets were reported to police Aug. 3. The EPS said the complainants were uncertain about the locations where the wallets were lost. Anyone locating these items can drop them off at the police station to have them returned to the owners.
EPS members located insecure doors at a downtown business. The building was cleared to confirm nobody was present inside, the EPS said, and a property representative attended to lock the doors.
An individual was reported to have broken into a room at a motel in the city centre and refused to open the door to staff or leave the premises. The EPS said members attended and following an extended period of time on-scene, were able to arrest the individual for break and enter and breach of court-ordered conditions. He was subsequently lodged in cells and will be released with a future court date to speak to the charges.
While on patrol, members located damage to one of the outbuildings at the Estevan Exhibition grounds. The EPS said additional follow-up is to occur regarding the cause of the damage.
