ONION LAKE CREE NATION — A 28-year-old man who was previously convicted of manslaughter is now the subject of a province-wide warrant after an armed robbery on Onion Lake Cree Nation.
RCMP are asking the public to report sightings of Dakota Whitstone, who is wanted on multiple charges following an incident on July 31.
According to Onion Lake RCMP, at approximately 11:55 p.m., police received a report of a robbery on the First Nation. An investigation determined a male suspect approached a victim, assaulted them, threatened them with a firearm, and stole their phone before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. The victim didn't report any physical injuries to police.
Responding officers later located the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle didn’t stop for police. Officers continued patrolling the area but weren’t able to locate the vehicle.
Whitstone has been charged with several offences related to the incident, including assault, robbery with a firearm, and flight from police. He also faces charges for pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and failing to comply with a release order condition.
Manslaughter conviction
In November 2020, Whitstone was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter. He was given 25.5 months credit for time served while on remand awaiting trial.
Court previously heard that in August 2018, after a night of drinking, Whitstone stabbed his brother-in-law, 28-year-old Tyson Blair Crosschild from the Blood Tribe, several times in the arm, chest and back. One of the stab wounds went through his ribs and pierced his heart.
Parole documents reveal that Whitstone was a member of a street gang but he said he left the gang when he went to prison.
A warrant has been issued for his arrest and Onion Lake RCMP are working to locate him. Officers ask anyone who sees him, or has information on his whereabouts, to call police
