REGINA – A 30-year-old man accused of driving at speeds up to 100 km/h through Regina residential areas while fleeing police — and tracked from the air the entire time — remains in custody.
Nickolaos Velikas faces charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, obstruction, resisting arrest, identity fraud with intent to avoid arrest, dangerous driving, impaired driving, and driving while prohibited. He is scheduled back in Regina Provincial Court on Aug. 12.
Police say the incident that led to the charges began shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 4, 2025, when Regina Police Service patrol officers were dispatched to a business in the 3700 block of Chuka Boulevard for a report of an impaired driver.
While officers on the ground were en route, the Aerial Support Unit (ASU) located the vehicle from above and reported it leaving the area, swerving and nearly colliding with parked vehicles and oncoming traffic.
Officers initiated a traffic stop and found two people inside the vehicle. The driver was showing signs of impairment and provided fraudulent identification. Officers repeatedly asked him to exit the vehicle. He refused and fled at a high speed.
The ASU continued tracking the driver as he raced through the city’s east end, running traffic signals, nearly colliding with other vehicles, and almost striking a child on a bicycle, say police.
The vehicle finally stopped near the 1400 block of Grosvenor Street. Both occupants fled on foot. Guided by the ASU unit, officers located them near Dewdney Avenue and Ring Road and arrested them after a short chase.
A search of the driver yielded 219 grams of methamphetamine, a small quantity of cocaine, cash, and a pocket knife.
