It wasn’t all that long ago that Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive back Jonathan Edouard was at home wondering if his CFL career had come to an end.
Now he’s the first member of the Green and White DB corps to come up with an interception this season.
Edouard got the job done with 12:48 left in the fourth quarter and it was a spectacular one, as he made a diving catch along the sidelines to snuff out a promising drive for the Redblacks.

“On a personal level, I’m so happy for this guy,” Roughriders head coach Corey Mace said after Saskatchewan’s 42-20 victory on Friday night. “He’s a great dude and just works. He got the game ball for us tonight on defence, and everybody is going to talk about the interception but he made a lot of plays tonight.”
A fourth-year veteran of the CFL wars, Edouard was released by the Toronto Argonauts out of training camp this spring and was at home as the injury bug began to take hold of Saskatchewan’s defensive backs.
That led to Riders signing Edouard on June 17, and 10 days later he was starting against his old team at Mosaic Stadium.
Turns out, Edouard had plenty left in the tank — he currently has a career-high 15 defensive tackles to go along with a further eight on special teams. And now, the second interception of his career.
“It means the world to come in here and they trust me, letting me play and taking the leash off me as they say,” Edouard said. “It means the world to play for a coach that I know has accepted me and I love all these guys. They’re like my brothers, so it’s a privilege.”
Mace felt Edouard being a good fit right from the beginning has helped with his solid play.
“The guys embraced him as the man and person he is as well as a football player,” he said. “I’m happy he got that moment for us, but ultimately we had a lot of guys play well on defence today.”
Edouard was of much the same opinion when it came to the overall showing of the defence, especially with his pick being one of many big plays on the day.
“Those are the ones you love the most,” he said. “It was a great team win and there was no specific group that thrived (on their own). The DB thrived because of the D-line and the D-line thrives because the DBs started doing better in coverage.”
Saskatchewan is now off until Saturday when they’re in Hamilton to take on the Tiger-Cats. Game time is 5 p.m.
