ESTEVAN — A man is facing assault-related charges following an incident at an Estevan lounge on the weekend.
According to the Aug. 8 report for the Estevan Police Service (EPS), members attended to a liquor establishment in response to a disturbance between patrons. On arrival, one of those involved was seen to be throwing chairs at others in the lounge and damaging property. After conducting field interviews with several witnesses at the scene, the EPS said a 40-year-old Estevan man was arrested and charged with one count of assault, two counts of assault with a weapon and one count of mischief under $5,000.
He was remanded in custody, appeared in Estevan Provincial Court on Aug. 10 to speak to the charges, and was released with conditions.
In other recent police news,a complaint of an individual uttering threats was received during the Aug. 5 day shift. The EPS said the matter remains under investigation.
Police investigated a single-vehicle collision with a business’ fence in the city centre area. The EPS said charges for mischief are pending, as the driver reportedly further damaged the fence while attempting to remove the vehicle from the scene.
A grossly intoxicated man was reportedly stumbling while walking in the Hillside area. The EPS said members attended to the area but could not locate the individual.
EPS members investigated a Report Impaired Drivers call during the early night shift. The vehicle was located, the EPS said, and the driver, who showed no signs of impairment, participated in providing a mandatory breath sample with a result of zero. The driver was cautioned regarding the observed driving actions and sent on their way.
A report of a suspicious man walking in the Hillcrest area was received. The EPS said members patrolled the area but were unable to locate the person.
The EPS received a complaint of an assault involving several family members in east Estevan. On police arrival, the EPS said visible injuries were seen on two victims who indicated that a third family member had assaulted them both and uttered threats against them. An investigation located the youth suspect at a separate location later in the shift and he was arrested without incident. He was lodged in cells pending charges of assault and uttering threats, and was released on conditions once processed.
A noise complaint in the Pleasantdale area of Estevan came in, related to loud music being played from a vehicle. The EPS said the vehicle left after the complainant yelled at the occupants and patrols of the area did not locate the vehicle during the remainder of the shift.
The theft of copper wire from a business in the east industrial area was reported Aug. 6, the EPS said, and remains under investigation.
An 18-year-old Estevan man was arrested for failing to comply with court-ordered conditions, the EPS said, as he was reported to have been in contact with an individual that he is prohibited from contacting. He was charged and subsequently released, and will appear in Estevan Provincial Court at a later date to speak to the charge.
A complaint of a hit-and-run collision was investigated during the day shift. The EPS said the responsible driver and vehicle were identified and located. The driver was charged with failing to notify a property owner of damage under the Traffic Safety Act.
Multiple compliance checks were conducted on individuals bound by court-ordered conditions. All those checked were found to be in compliance with their respective conditions.
A man was reported to be smoking cannabis in public in the city centre area on Aug. 7. The EPS said members located the individual and intended to issue him a ticket under the Cannabis Control Act, but he refused to identify himself and attempted to walk away from police. He was arrested, subsequently charged for obstruction and issued a ticket for consuming cannabis in public. He was released and will make a future court appearance to speak to the criminal charge.
A verbal warning was issued to a resident who had placed garbage on a city boulevard. The EPS said the items were subsequently removed.
A report of a male behaving inappropriately and exposing himself at a park in Estevan was received, and the EPS said it remains under investigation.
A report of a domestic disturbance occurring in a vehicle was received Aug. 8. Members were unable to locate the vehicle, but identified one of the parties and made contact to confirm the well-being of those involved. At the time of contact, the EPS said the two individuals involved had parted ways and no physical violence was reported to have occurred.
A report of criminal harassment was investigated and determined to be unfounded.
EPS members attended to a complaint of a loud party in the Valleyview area. The EPS said the resident hosting the party was warned under the noise bylaw.
EPS members attended to a residential alarm in the Pleasantdale area on Aug. 9 that the EPS said was determined to have been accidentally set off by the homeowner.
A report of an individual acting out and experiencing a mental health crisis was received by the EPS. Members located the person in the Pleasantdale area and transported him to the hospital for assessment and medical intervention.
A theft from a business in the Scotsburn area was investigated and the suspect identified. She was located a short distance away and arrested for theft. As she had recently been involved in several similar occurrences, she was lodged in cells and appeared in Estevan Provincial Court the following day. The woman was released with conditions.
The EPS received a report of an assault in progress that was observed by a third party. The investigation identified those involved, but the EPS said the victim declined to participate in the investigation or provide a statement in the matter. The investigation remains under investigation.
A report of several suspicious individuals in the Valleyview area of Estevan was received. The EPS said members located the subjects and determined that they were moving into a residence and carrying personal items into the building. No criminal activity was identified.
Officers attended to St. Joseph’s Hospital in response to an unruly patient who had damaged property and locked themselves in a bathroom. The EPS said staff was fearful for their safety and that of other patients present. Members de-escalated the situation and were able to negotiate with the individual to exit the bathroom. He was arrested for mischief and lodged in cells, pending additional medical assessment.
A traffic stop conducted during night shift resulted in the driver showing signs of impairment and subsequently participating in roadside standardized field sobriety tests. The EPS said he performed poorly on the tests and was transported to the hospital where samples of his blood were obtained. Charges for impaired driving are pending results of the analysis of the samples.
A complaint of two individuals sleeping in the hallway of an apartment complex in the Hillside area was received. Members attended and located the individuals, who are known to police, and sent them on their way.
