Saskatchewan soldiers played a critical role in the liberation of Europe during World War Two.
A fierce, defining battle took place during the third week of August, 1944.
The brave soldiers of the South Saskatchewan Regiment were fighting directly alongside the First Canadian Army in France. Their vital mission was to close the strategic Falaise Gap and trap the retreating German forces.
The regiment faced relentless enemy artillery fire and suffered heavy casualties during days of intense, bloody combat. Despite their severe losses, the Saskatchewan soldiers held the line and secured a vital Allied victory in Normandy.
Their bravery helped break the German front line and accelerated the march toward the end of the war.
