SASKATOON, Sask. — A woman who was wanted for being unlawfully at large has been arrested and faces new charges.
Carolyn (also known as Caroline) Sutherland, 36, appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Aug. 26. She is charged with impaired driving (by drugs or alcohol), and possession of property obtained by crime (a vehicle).
Her matter was adjourned to Sept. 28 for plea.
Sutherland had been serving a federal sentence of two years, six months and 24 days for aggravated assault, kidnapping and unlawful confinement stemming from a street gang-related attack in Saskatoon.
The charges arose from an August 2020 incident in Riversdale where Saskatoon police found a 26-year-old man zip-tied to a chair and suffering from extensive injuries. Police said the assault was targeted and gang-motivated.
Parole records describe the victim as having been pistol whipped, stabbed 17 times, burned with a meth pipe, beaten with a bottle, and left with gang initials carved into his chest. The assault lasted several hours.
Sutherland has a long history of non-compliance, gang involvement and substance abuse, according to parole documents. She has an extensive criminal record that includes convictions for obstruction, property/theft, fraud, non-compliance, weapons, robbery, assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement, breaches of trust, and drugs.
While in prison, Sutherland was involved in a gang-related assault on another inmate. She was also observed wearing gang colours in the yard and posing for photographs with other gang members, according to parole documents.
