When the Saskatchewan crop report is released tomorrow, expect it to show harvest progress lagging even further behind the five and 10-year averages for this time of year.
Substantial rain over the weekend halted harvest activities. Amounts up to one, two, three and even four inches of rain fell depending upon the area.
There are some drown out patches and second growth in crops is sometimes a problem.
Even as the ground dries up, heavy dews persist in the morning and it gets damp as the sun goes down.
For those able to resume harvest, the days are short until the drying trend is more general. Showers are in the forecast on and off and that won’t be helpful.
Continued weather delays could take a toll on crop quality. One of the first casualties could be malting barley that has now been reduced to feed.
A lot of crops were seeded late this spring and are still green. Grain driers are already being employed and it could be a year with extensive grain drying costs.
