BATTLEFORD, Sask. — It was an exciting time in the Battlefords on the weekend as players participated in the National Amateur Disc Golf Tour Canada National Championships.
The event was held Aug. 29 and 30 at the Riverview Disc Golf Course in Battleford.
One of the organizers, Adam Bolig, said about 50 people took part in the event.
"It would have been nicer to see more players," he said. "But I think no one really knows Battleford. It's a little remote."
"We did have players from B.C., Alberta, Manitoba, and a few from Saskatchewan," he said.
The event also included players from the Battlefords.
"We had a few from the Battlefords that actually took home a few trophies," Bolig said.
The big winner from the event was Cole Tenetuik from the Battlefords, who won the Mixed Amateurs 1 Division. That's the top award.
"This was our first year hosting nationals in the Battlefords," Bolig said. "It's an annual event. You have to put in a bid for it."
He said he was impressed with Tenetuik's performance.
"He represented the Battlefords very well," Bolig said. "He did really well. He was the top scorer through all the different divisions."
Bolig believes that to be a good disc golf player, a person needs to develop a good technique.
"You just got to be able to learn from other players," he said. "You got to go out and have fun. It's not about just ripping a disc. It's about learning from other players that you play with, and eventually you get better and better at it."
Bolig said he was excited to see other players from across Canada taking part in the tournament.
"It was awesome to see players from B.C., Alberta, and Manitoba," he said. "We got really huge reviews from them about our course. They never expected us to have such a beautiful course, and the amount of work we've done to it over the years. They are looking forward to getting a chance to come back at some point for another tournament down the road."
Bolig thanked all the sponsors and the Town of Battleford for helping make the event possible.
