Sometimes a football team needs a little reminder. A reminder of what it’s capable of. A reminder of how it expects to play. And maybe, just maybe, a reminder of how much an opening-week loss can sting.
The Saskatchewan Huskies came into homecoming weekend with a chip on their shoulder after being upset by Manitoba in their season opener. They played like it, and they finished like it. The Huskies scored 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to turn a close game into a convincing 44-24 victory over the Calgary Dinos.
The tone was set on Saskatchewan’s very first possession.
The Huskies faced a third-down situation early in the opening drive. That’s usually when a defence expects the offence to make a decision. Saskatchewan made a statement instead. Javin Boynton took the handoff and found the edge, racing 81 yards for a touchdown.

Just like that, the Huskies were on the board, and the homecoming crowd was into it.
Calgary got on the board when the Huskies conceded a safety before quarterback David Jordan connected with Evan Smith for a three-yard touchdown. The Dinos added a two-point convert to take a 10-7 lead.
The Huskies, however, weren’t about to let the early momentum disappear. Late in the first quarter, quarterback Anton Amundrud moved the offence down the field, connecting with Keaton Belsher to help set up a third-and-goal opportunity.
The home team wasn’t done there as Amundrud then found Thomas Jule for a six-yard touchdown. The Huskies were back in front, 14-10.

Boynton added another touchdown in the second quarter, scoring on a one-yard sneak on third-and-goal. Saskatchewan took a 21-10 lead into halftime.
The Huskies extended that advantage early in the third quarter. Amundrud connected with Belsher for a 22-yard touchdown, giving Saskatchewan a 28-10 lead. It was Belsher’s first Canada West touchdown.

The Huskies appeared in control, but Calgary had other ideas.
Jordan returned to the game after leaving with an injury and immediately helped breathe life into the Dinos offence. He found Pasquale Delmonaco for an eight-yard touchdown, cutting the Saskatchewan lead to 28-17.
Then, with just 1:27 left in the third quarter, Jordan hit Matt Sibley for a 52-yard touchdown. Suddenly, the Dinos were within four.
The Huskies went from being in control to facing a Calgary team with plenty of confidence. That’s when special teams changed everything.
Calgary moved into field-goal range early in the fourth quarter. The Dinos had a chance to make it a one-point game. Instead, the kick went wide. Saskatchewan’s Daniel Kubongo was waiting. Kubongo gathered in the missed field goal and took it 123 yards back the other way for a touchdown.

With 11:52 remaining, Saskatchewan restored some breathing room with a 35-24 lead. It was the kind of play that can completely change a football game.
Calgary had been threatening to take control. Kubongo made sure that didn’t happen.
The Huskies defence then forced a turnover on downs when a third-down pass intended for Sibley was broken up. One play later, Amundrud found Belsher for a 35-yard touchdown. Belsher had his second major of the evening. The Huskies were up 42-24.
On Calgary’s next possession, Nathan Jule sacked the Dinos quarterback on third down, forcing another turnover on downs.
The Huskies missed a 41-yard field goal attempt by Lucas Scott, but Saskatchewan continued to control the game.
After a Calgary punt, the Huskies drove to the Dinos’ five-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. Calgary conceded a safety following the turnover, making the final score 44-24.
For Saskatchewan, it was a response.
The response included an 81-yard touchdown run on third down and a missed field-goal return touchdown that turned the game around.
Amundrud finished the game 20-for-30 passing for 304 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Belsher caught seven passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Boynton rushed eight times for 86 yards and two touchdowns, while also catching four passes for 31 yards. Kubongo was a special teams difference-maker, finishing with 249 all-purpose yards.
The Huskies came into homecoming weekend with a chip on their shoulder. They left with a convincing win. The Huskies will head out on the road next week to Alberta to take on the Golden Bears.
