Two Saskatchewan-based football players were recognized as Canadian West players of the week for their work last Friday.
Regina Rams’ Jacob Tkachuk was named defensive player of the while, whereas Saskatchewan Huskies’ Daniel Kubongo got the special teams nod.
Tkachuk had three tackles, assisted on four others, forced a fumble, and made an interception in 23-8 win over the Manitoba Bisons.
His forced fumble in the second quarter led to a touchdown from Rams running back Christian Katende two plays later. His interception was timely as it occurred on the Regina four-yard line with the Bisons threatening close the gap to a two-score game.
Kubongo had the most electrifying play of Saskatchewan’s 44-24 over the Calgary Dinos when he returned a missed field goal 123 yards for a touchdown. Kubongo also set a Huskies record for the longest missed field goal return ever. He averaged 19.4 yards on his seven returns.
