The summer of 2026 across the prairies will go down as one of the most bizarre in terms of weather thanks to significant flooding, wild storms, cold weather, intense winds, and dangerous tornadoes.
According to the latest count from the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP), Canada is on pace to having one of the most active tornado years. 110 land spouts have been confirmed across the country, 36 of which were reported in Saskatchewan. The strongest and most devastating twister arrived on June 9th in the North Portal/Oxbow region of Saskatchewan where one farm was completely destroyed. It measured EF-3 on the tornado severity scale with winds of up to 245km/h.
Alberta had the second most tornadoes this year at 30 including two EF-2 twisters in Clearwater County in July. Manitoba was hit with 15 confirmed tornadoes, Ontario at 21, Quebec has had six, and two were reported in the Maritimes.
The Northern Tornadoes Project started in 2017 at Western University as a way to better understand twisters and help with more timely predictions. So far, 2022 has been the most active year with 12o confirmed twisters across Canada according records from the NTP.
