Despite numerous public awareness campaigns, signs, and education, littering is still an issue that many cities, rural municipalities, and parks of all sizes and types still deal with. Most know it is wrong to litter or misplace garbage, yet it still happens all over the world.
This year, a record-setting amount of trash was removed from the hydrothermal areas of Yellowstone National Park in the United States. Among the the items removed from these areas included over 20 thousand pieces of paper and plastic, 280 hats, and 54 camera lens caps.
Workers in the park also discovered 47 hair ties, 17 pacifiers, 36 pairs of sunglasses, 20 hotel key cards, and over 5,600 rocks and sticks tossed into the thermal areas.
Staff is reminding visitors that geysers and hot springs in Yellowstone National Park are not wishing wells. They found over $18 in coins from around the world including Canadian loonies.
Some of the more unusual items workers found were 15 fake fingernails, several floss picks, and a single Uno card.
