LLOYDMINSTER, Sask. — A 28-year-old man convicted of manslaughter in 2020 is back behind bars after being sentenced for an armed robbery on Onion Lake Cree Nation earlier this year.
In Lloydminster Provincial Court, Dakota Whitstone was sentenced to 150 days in jail. He was given 24 days remand credit, leaving him with 126 days left to serve as of Sept. 10.
The incident occurred on July 31. Onion Lake RCMP say they received a report of a robbery at approximately 11:55 p.m. that day. Their investigation determined a suspect approached a victim, assaulted him, threatened him with a firearm, and stole his phone before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. The victim didn't report any physical injuries to police.
Responding officers later located the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The driver, later identified as Whitstone, didn’t stop for police. Officers continued patrolling the area but weren’t able to locate the vehicle.
In August, Onion Lake RCMP released his photo saying he was the subject of a province-wide warrant.
In November 2020, Whitstone was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
Court previously heard that in August 2018, after a night of drinking, Whitstone stabbed his brother-in-law, 28-year-old Tyson Blair Crosschild from the Blood Tribe, several times in the arm, chest and back. One of the stab wounds went through his ribs and pierced his heart.
Parole documents indicate that Whitstone was a member of Westside Outlawz street gang but said he left the gang when he went to prison.
