REGINA, Sask. — Residents and drivers may see a large flame, and hear noise, as SaskEnergy conducts a controlled natural gas flare at its Town Border Station located in east Regina at the intersection of Arcola Avenue and Wascana View Drive.
Flaring will take place between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22. .
The flare involves the use of a temporary 120-foot tall stack, which is taller than a standard stack and is designed to help reduce the noise generated by the flare. Motorists and pedestrians may notice additional SaskEnergy crews and equipment on site.
SaskEnergy will be conducting planned inspection work on its natural gas system in the area. Annual maintenance and integrity work supports the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to customers, according to SaskEnergy. Flaring is required to safely remove natural gas from the system so this work can be completed, SaskEnergy says.
Flaring is an industry standard practice that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 85 per cent compared to venting natural gas into the atmosphere, according to SaskEnergy.
Natural gas service to customers will not be interrupted and no traffic restrictions are expected.
The area around the flare will be supervised to ensure public safety. SaskEnergy has notified the City of Regina Fire Department and Police Service about the flaring.
