REGINA, Sask. — It’s a new date for Light the Lights.
Without any debate, Regina city council unanimously approved Ward 8 Coun. Shanon Zachidniak's motion to change the annual winter event from Dec. 1 to Nov. 19.
“We’re finding efficiency by instead of having two Christmas lighting events, we are combining them to have one and make it even better.”
Now, with the date change, Light the Lights will see collaboration with the Regina Downtown Business Improvement District (RDBID) and other downtown partners.
RDBID had previously held a Christmas tree lighting event in November, but the two similar events had created confusion.
“These events sometimes get confused with each other along the way, so there is an opportunity to bring them together and share resources,” said city administration.
Administration also pointed out the event would come right after Canadian Western Agribition, bringing more shoppers downtown.
Light the Lights has been held in the city since 2002.
It draws hundreds of people to city hall each year with activities, games and a light show.
