REGINA, Sask. — The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes Wednesday, Sept. 30 as Truth and Reconciliation Day. The day honours residential school Survivors, their families and communities and remembers the children who did not return home.
"Understanding the history and lasting impacts of residential schools is a responsibility we all share," Minister Responsible for First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs Eric Schmalz said. "By listening to survivors and learning from their experiences, we can strengthen relationships with First Nation and Métis people and support continued reconciliation efforts across Saskatchewan."
In December 2025, the province released "Dayagen Togada Mani: 10 Years of Action Supporting Truth and Reconciliation in Saskatchewan." The Nakota title means "moving ahead in a good way." The document highlights actions taken across government to advance reconciliation.
The Office of the Treaty Commissioner works with First Nations and other Saskatchewan residents to increase understanding of the Treaties and the Treaty relationship. Through education, public dialogue and partnerships, the office encourages people to recognize their shared Treaty responsibilities and contribute to reconciliation in Saskatchewan.
"You cannot have reconciliation before truth and the TRC was clear that Treaties are the truth of our shared history and must be the foundation of our governance on our Treaty territories," Treaty Commissioner of Saskatchewan Dr. Kathy Walker said. "Honouring the Treaties are key to building relationships based on respect, peace and mutual prosperity."
Since 2021, Sept. 30 has been observed federally as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The date is also Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led movement inspired by residential school Survivor Phyllis Webstad. It honours the children who attended residential schools and affirms that every child matters.
Flags at provincial government buildings, including the Legislative Building, will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset. Residents are encouraged to wear orange, participate in local events and learn about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools.
