ESTEVAN, Sask. — Members of the Estevan Police Service (EPS) conducted a targeted traffic enforcement blitz in an 80 kilometre per hour (km/h) zone on Highway 39 during the early night shift of Sept. 29.
According to the EPS, the primary focus was speeding and ensuring motorists slow to 60 km/h when passing emergency vehicles. Multiple tickets were issued to motorists exceeding the speed limit, the EPS said.
Also on Sept. 29, members were called to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Kensington Avenue and Rooney Road. Estevan Emergency Medical Services and the Estevan Fire Rescue Service also responded. The EPS said both vehicles were towed from the scene and the matter remains under investigation.
That same day, the EPS received a report of a woman sitting in the ditch next to the highway northwest of Estevan. Members attended and determined the individual was walking and did not require any further assistance from police.
A complaint was filed of a backyard fire causing significant smoke. The EPS said the homeowner was cautioned against burning leaves and advised of the restrictions under the fire bylaw.
A report came in of three girls causing a disturbance at the Estevan Market Mall. The EPS said members located the youths and sent them on their way.
An investigation into the ownership of a dog, originally reported as missing or stolen, resulted in two individuals claiming to be the canine's owner. The EPS said several sightings of a similarly-described dog running at large were received over the weekend, and the animal was eventually located and captured in central Estevan during the Sept. 29 night shift. Both individuals claiming to be the owner were advised and requested to speak with each other to determine who would retain the dog, the EPS said, and to contact police if further assistance was required.
A report was received Sept. 28 of damage to a trailer associated with an attempted theft in the central area. The EPS said it remains under investigation.
Members attended to a complaint of a woman laying on the ground in the Hillside area. She was located and subsequently arrested for causing a disturbance and breaching court-ordered conditions. The EPS said she was grossly intoxicated at the time, so she was lodged in cells and released when sober, with a future court date to speak to the charges.
A bicycle theft from the Pleasantdale area was reported and the EPS said it remains under investigation.
EPS members were requested to assist an individual that was experiencing a mental health crisis and who had made threats of self-harm. During interaction with officers, the EPS said the person became violent and attempted to cause physical harm to the police. Members subsequently arrested the person under the Mental Health Act, and for assaulting a police officer and public intoxication. The individual was to be assessed by a mental health professional when sober and prior to release from custody.
A complaint of a vehicle being taken without consent was received during the night shift. The EPS said the owner of the vehicle had permitted an acquaintance to use the vehicle, but it had not been returned when expected. The matter remains under investigation.
