SASKATOON, Sask. — A woman accused of attacking a 75-year-old woman with a shovel and assaulting a special constable during processing has been sentenced to jail time.
Gina Pearl Beatty, 28, has one year and eight months (613 days) left to serve after Judge Bruce Bauer sentenced her on Sept. 29 in Saskatoon Provincial Court.
During a contested sentencing hearing on Sept. 21, defence lawyer Kimbal MacMillan argued for a conditional sentence order, to be served in the community. Crown prosecutor Muhammad Zubair asked the court for a jail sentence.
Beatty pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm against the senior and Saskatoon Police Service special constable. The shovel attack occurred in a community garden in Saskatoon on Aug. 21, 2025.
She was also convicted of punching a woman twice in July 2025 in Prince Albert. In that incident, court heard she screamed, “I’m the devil,” during the confrontation.
Beatty was further convicted of failing to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court and breaching probation in 2025.
At the time of the assaults, she was already on probation for burning down Prince Albert’s Senator Allen Bird Memorial Centre in 2022. Court heard she was coming down from a methamphetamine high during the arson.
During last week’s sentencing hearing, court also heard that Beatty’s arson conviction had been dealt with through an informal sentencing circle with members of the Prince Albert Grand Council and representatives from various communities and organizations.
