The Weyburn Red Wings snapped a two-game losing streak Sunday night, exploding for five goals in the second period on their way to a 9-5 victory over the Yorkton Terriers.
It was a nightmare start for Yorkton, as Trennen Redlick opened the scoring just 1:48 into the game, beating Brady Low on a nice backhand finish.
The Red Wings then added three more goals over a span of just 6:06, with Aidan Mohan, Callas Pierce and Redlick finding the net to make it 4-0.
Yorkton finally got on the board late in the opening frame. With just 22 seconds left, Alex Morrison buried a rebound past Ethan Berard for his fourth goal of the season and third straight game with a goal.
The Terriers carried that momentum into the second.
Evan Hymovitch tipped home his first career SJHL goal to cut the deficit to 4-2, and just over three minutes later, Mathys Morrissette scored his fourth of the season, going between the legs and over Berard’s shoulder to make it a one-goal game.
But Weyburn answered on back-to-back power plays, with Mohan and Jace Harder scoring just four minutes apart to restore the three-goal cushion.
Harder added his second of the night later in the period, followed by another from Pierce, making it 8-3. Tyson Medernach answered for Yorkton with 1:32 left in the frame to make it 8-4 after 40 minutes.
Kiran Fedun scored his first SJHL goal early in the third to make it 9-4, finishing off a pass from Ridley Ringor, who picked up his third assist of the night.
Hymovitch added his second of the game with just 26 seconds remaining to round out the scoring.
Berard stopped 35 of 40 shots to earn his third win of the season.
Low made his SJHL debut for the Terriers, allowing three goals on nine shots before giving way to Callum Creig. Creig stopped 18 of 23 before Low returned for the third period, allowing one more goal on nine shots.
The loss drops Yorkton to 3-2-and-1 on the season, while Weyburn improves to 4-3 and moves into a tie with Melville for first place in the Bunge Division.
The Terriers return to action Friday night when they host the Melville Millionaires to open a home-and-home series.
Weyburn begins a busy stretch Wednesday in Melfort before heading to La Ronge for back-to-back games Friday and Saturday.
