ESTEVAN, Sask. — A 38-year-old Bienfait man has been charged for impaired driving following a traffic stop.
According to the Oct. 3 report from the Estevan Police Service, the man provided samples of breath with results of .11 and .13, and was subsequently charged and released to a family member who agreed to ensure his well-being until he was sober.
In other recent police news, members received a request from a property owner Oct. 1 to assist them in serving a trespass notice to an Estevan man. The EPS said the property owner doesn’t want the man visiting any tenants on their properties.
A business reported that an individual tried to use credit cards to purchase some items and believed that one of the cards was used fraudulently. The EPS said the owner of the card contacted the business, stated she lives in a different jurisdiction and had not made a purchase at the store. The matter remains under investigation.
An individual reported that they had responded to an online survey and provided personal banking information. The victim later realized there was an unauthorized withdrawal from their account, the EPS said. The bank was contacted and the account frozen, but the transfer had already occurred. The matter is also under investigation.
Police received a driving complaint. The vehicle was located a short time later, the EPS said, and the driver was warned about the observed driving actions.
EPS members attended to a collision in which no injuries occurred but both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. According to the EPS, one of the motorists had parked the driver’s side of the vehicle to the curb at a community mailbox, and when pulling away, collided with another vehicle. The EPS reminds the public that it is an offence under both the Traffic Safety Act and Estevan parking bylaw to drive left of centre or park with the driver’s side of the vehicle towards the curb.
The EPS received a 911 hang-up call Oct. 2 from a local business, after which the Estevan Fire Rescue Service received a call from the same location, reporting individuals trapped in an elevator. The EPS said members attended and confirmed that the 911 call was made in relation to the people stuck in the elevator and no other emergency existed.
Police received a report from a concerned citizen who had witnessed two individuals pushing quads down an alley. She was worried the people might be in the process of committing a theft. The EPS said members attended and the matter is under investigation.
Members observed a substantial amount of litter on a business parking lot. The EPS said an investigation determined that a group of youths were responsible for dumping the material and surveillance video of the parking lot is being obtained in an effort to identify those responsible.
Police received a report of individuals trespassing on private property. The EPS said members attended and patrolled the area but were unable to locate anyone in the vicinity.
EPS members attempted to perform a traffic stop on a pick-up truck to check for driver sobriety during the night shift. The truck failed to stop and fled from police. A pursuit was not initiated, the EPS said, and an investigation into flight from police is ongoing to identify the driver. The matter remains under investigation.
The EPS received a report Oct. 3 of a confused elderly man who had been missing for almost an hour. The EPS said K9 and drone units were deployed and the man was located a short time later and returned safely to his family.
Homeowners in a residential area reported locking their door before going to sleep, but found the door ajar later in the night. The EPS said the matter is still under investigation.
EPS received a report of a side-by-side being operated in the city. Members located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver fled the scene. A pursuit was not initiated and an investigation into flight from police is underway.
EPS members assisted the Estevan RCMP by attending to the Doug Third Hall for a report of a fight in progress. On arrival, members determined the disturbance was caused by an out-of-town man attending a family gathering who was unwanted. The man was cautioned about his behaviour and sent on his way in a cab to his hotel.
A second report of a fight was received during night shift, this time in the Westview area. The EPS said members attended and spoke with all parties involved and determined the disturbance was a misunderstanding between friends. All those present were sent on their way and no further issues with the group were reported during the rest of the shift.
Staff at a local hotel received harassing and obscene communications Oct. 4 from a person initially believed to be attempting to arrange for lodging on the phone. The EPS said the matter remains under investigation and the subject’s telephone number has been identified.
A wellness check on a man in the Valleyview area was conducted at the request of an out-of-town friend, following concerning online posts. The EPS said the man was found to be safe and well and in the care of family members. Additional follow-up is to be conducted by the Police and Crisis Team.
Police attended to a disturbance at Affinity Place involving a man who is known to police during the dayshift. The EPS said he was sent on his way and cautioned that his behaviour was scaring children who were present.
EPS members assisted the Estevan RCMP by attending a complaint of several youths fighting at Woodlawn Regional Park. An investigation determined that the youths had been “rage fighting” and were participating consensually. The EPS said no significant injuries were reported during the incident. The group was cautioned about their behaviour and sent on their way, the EPS said, with a warning that similar activities in the future may result in bylaw charges for consensual fighting in public.
