It’s not unusual to see people hanging out in front of the radio station when I pull in to work. I’ve blogged many times over the years about the characters I’ve met on my four foot walk between my vehicle and the front door.
This morning I noticed another person suffering the effects of the urban blight that is homelessness. This guy wasn’t in front of the station though. As a matter of fact, if you walked in front of our building you probably would even notice him.
As I pulled up to the garage door to enter our underground parking I saw someone sleeping in the entryway. There is a two foot ledge beside the drive that vehicles follow to exit our building. That’s where this man was sleeping. There’s not much room for error when you’re sleeping there. If his arm happened to fall to his side and there was a vehicle exiting the building, his next sleep would be in a bed at the General Hospital.
I thought he might of woken up while I was waiting for my card to activate the door to let me in, but he didn’t move a hair.
Maybe he was dreaming of his childhood when he didn’t have a care in the world, waiting for mom to call him in for a nice warm meal surrounded by family at the dinner table. Maybe he was dreaming of some of the good times he had before the wheels fell off and deposited him in the situation he now finds himself mired in.
It’s sad. I hate to see people in that situation.
I’m always reminded of the old adage, ” But for the grace of God go I.”
