REGINA, Sask. —The Regina Police Service is reminding the public to be vigilant and to not share personal or financial information during unsolicited phone or video calls.
RPS has received several reports of individuals receiving video calls from someone posing as a STARS Lottery representative and claiming involvement with the Bank of Montreal. During the call, the individual is told they have won a prize and must send between $300 and $500 before arrangements can be made to pick up the prize.
When individuals advise the caller that they are not listed as winners on the STARS Lottery website, the caller claims their name will be added to the list of winners after the money is sent.
RPS is reminding the public of the following:
-Legitimate organizations, such as STARS, will not ask for payment in order to claim a prize.
-Do not share personal or financial information over the phone, by email, or through unfamiliar websites.
-If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact the organization directly using verified contact information to confirm the details.
-Awareness is key to preventing fraud. Share this information with family, friends, and others in your community.
If you believe you are a victim of fraud or suspect someone is attempting to defraud you, contact the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500. In an emergency, call 911.
