EARL GREY, Sask. — A routine stop for gas turned into a six-figure surprise for an Earl Grey couple after a ticket check revealed a $100,000 Lotto Max win.
David and Audrey Cann won the prize on the Aug. 18 draw.
For David, checking lottery tickets has become part of his regular routine.
"I went in to pay for my gas, and I check my tickets weekly, so my wallet doesn't get too full."
"I was in disbelief,” he continued. “I had no glasses on, so I scanned the ticket again and had to read all the '0's."
Still unsure he was seeing the prize amount correctly, David knew he needed to share the news with Audrey.
"We are very private people, so I’ve only told Audrey so far,” he explained. “I asked her if she was sitting down at first. She thought I was joking. Then, of course, she had to sit down."
While the excitement of the win is still fresh, the Canns already have some practical plans for their prize.
“We’re going to put some against our mortgage, and into a tax-free savings account for retirement."
The couple says the win is especially meaningful after years of playing together.
"It feels great,” said David. “We’ve been playing for decades – it’s nice to know people actually win."
David purchased the winning ticket from Sherwood Co-op Prince of Wales C-Store, located at 2020 Prince of Wales Dr. in Regina.
Their $100,000-winning numbers were 3, 13, 21, 26, 31, 33 and 41.
