ONION LAKE, Sask. — Two men from Onion Lake are facing fraud charges following an RCMP investigation into alleged misappropriation of funds intended for Onion Lake Cree Nation, say police.
Tommy Whitstone, 67, and Richard Stanley, 54, are each charged with fraud over $5,000. They will make their first appearance in Onion Lake Circuit Court on Nov. 25.
Earlier this year, on March 12, RCMP received a report of misappropriation of funds intended for Onion Lake Cree Nation. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Central District General Investigation Section launched an investigation, alongside the Onion Lake RCMP detachment. Their investigation determined that two men, over a four-year period, allegedly requested and received payments from landholders on Onion Lake Cree Nation in an unlawful manner.
Saskatchewan RCMP say they don’t usually release the names of victims of crime.
“However, we are sharing this information to help prevent further victimization and encourage anyone who believes they may have had suspicious or fraudulent dealings with either charged individual to call 310-RCMP,” said the RCMP in a media release on Oct. 7.
