MONTREAL LAKE, Sask. — A man who pleaded guilty to arson that caused a wildfire in northern Saskatchewan last summer was sentenced on Oct. 8 to six years in prison.
With credit for pretrial custody, Jason Wilson Halkett, 39, has about four and a half years remaining on his sentence.
Halkett was also given a 10 year firearm prohibition and ordered to provide his DNA to the National DNA Data Bank.
The fire started in the Weyakwin area, northeast of Saskatoon, causing damage to structures and forcing several communities to evacuate.
The fire also burned more than 200,000 hectares.
