BALGONIE, Sask. — The Greenall Griffins are turning their latest home-game theme into a show of support for injured team captain Hunter Gronick, with Spider-Man — one of his favourite superheroes — taking centre stage Friday night.
Gronick, the Griffins' team captain and punter, sustained a severe brain injury in a game against the Swift Current Comprehensive School Colts on Sept. 10 and is on the road to recovery.
Greenall High School is selling T-shirts at the gameon Oct. 9 at Leibel Field in Regina, with all proceeds going toward the GoFundMe started by Hunter's older sister, Emily. The design on the shirts was drawn by Hunter himself.
"We sent them a bunch of different drawings that he had done and they picked which one was going to go best, and we all have our shirts. Hunter's actually wearing his right now," says Emily.
Hunter's Headstrong Initiative – Protecting The Next Play is a fundraising campaign started by Hunter's mom, Sabrina, and Emily, with the goal of trying to prevent this type of injury from happening to anyone else.
"In the mix of all of the fear and unknown of what was going to happen, my mom and I both had this overwhelming call to try to see what we could do to help and make sure that no other family would experience the same thing," says Emily.
Emily says they have had support flooding in from all over Canada and are in contact with many other families who have gone through similar tragedies.
