SASKATOON, Sask. — The hits keep on coming. Another incident involving a truck hitting a road structure in the city occurred Wednesday, Oct. 14.
The incident happened in the afternoon when a truck with an excessive height struck the Idylwyld Drive overpass at the intersection of Lorne Avenue and Ruth Street. Social media was immediately flooded with photos and videos of the incident.
The Saskatoon Police Service said it received a report at approximately 2:30 p.m. of a semi-truck hitting the overpass.
“City engineers have already assessed the damage and cleared the scene, as have responding officers,” said SPS in a statement.
City crews were seen clearing what appeared to be a metal beam that may have fallen from the truck, which appeared to be hauling scrap metal.
The city said engineers and other inspectors checked the structure and saw only minor damage. It is not yet known whether the city will conduct additional inspections to determine the structure's integrity.
“The truck has been removed, and there are no traffic restrictions in place," said the city in a statement.
This is the seventh overpass strike in Saskatoon this year.
On March 5, a semi-truck carrying an excavator over the height limit hit the underside of the Highway 16 overpass. Almost a week later, another truck carrying an over-height load hit the 108th Street overpass.
Two structures were struck during another incident on March 22: the CPKC rail and pedestrian overpass between 108th Street and Attridge Drive and the McKercher Drive overpass.
On July 24, a semi-truck hauling a grain bin struck the 51st Street overpass on Idylwyld Drive.
Another collision occurred Aug. 9 at the Boychuk Drive overpass.
