If Braden Hordichuk wants to know anything about his new Western Hockey League team, he won’t have to go too far to ask.
The 17-year-old prospect was traded to the Saskatoon Blades by the Regina Pats on Saturday in exchange for a conditional eighth-round WHL Draft pick in 2030.
Regina’s first-overall pick in the 2024 U.S. Priority Draft, Hordichuk played one game for the Pats this season but had no points.
He suited up for the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes in both the 15U and 16U divisions during the 2024-25 season and racked up 29 goals and 69 points across 64 games. Hordichuk played most of last season with Southern Alberta Hockey Academy U18 Prep of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League, where he had six goals and 16 points in 27 games. He also suited up for four games with the Olds Grizzlies of the AJHL but had no points.
Braden is the son of former Blades standout Darcy Hordichuk, who carved his way through the WHL as an enforcer and racked up 515 penalty minutes in 129 regular season games. He then went on to play 12 seasons in the NHL and had 1,140 PIMs through 542 regular season outings.
The Blades are back in action Saturday night when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors. Game time is 7 p.m. at SaskTel Centre.
