PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — A police service dog tracked a man through several residential yards and alleyways late Thursday night, leading officers to a hiding spot beneath the steps of a home.
The Prince Albert Police Service say their Canine Unit tracked and assisted in the arrest of the suspect after officers responded at approximately 11:50 p.m. on Oct. 22 to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area of MacArthur Drive.
Upon arrival, police located a vehicle parked in an alley behind the 400 block of MacArthur Drive. As officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, two occupants exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
Investigation determined the vehicle had been reported stolen. Officers established containment of the area and requested the assistance of the Canine Unit. A Police Service Dog was deployed and successfully tracked the driver through several residential yards and alleyways.
The track led officers to a residence on Donaldson Street, where the suspect was located hiding beneath the steps of a side entrance. The suspect complied with police commands and was taken into custody without incident. The suspect was not engaged by the Police Service Dog.
The stolen vehicle was seized as part of the investigation.
As a result of the investigation, a 28-year-old man has been charged with five offences, including possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime, and failing to comply with a probation order.
