REGINA, Sask. — A personal connection to breast cancer helped inspire a fundraising campaign by Regina McDonald's franchisees that raised $10,000 for the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan.
The money will support local breast and prostate cancer research.
The campaign was spearheaded by local franchisee Faith Nguyen, with strong support from fellow franchisees Alex Hermann, Hiren Shah and Samad Bakhtbolland.
Throughout September and October, participating restaurants held two fundraising periods, donating a portion of the proceeds from select Chicken McNuggets and Big Mac purchases to the foundation.
Nguyen said the campaign was personal, as her mother has battled breast cancer twice.
“For me the campaign was about more than money. It was about supporting people and families in our own community, who are affected by cancer,” Nguyen said.
She said the franchisees wanted the money to remain in the community, with all funds raised going directly to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan.
“Every dollar raised is a person, a family, and a story. We really wanted the funds to stay in our local community to support families right here in Regina,” Nguyen said.
Nguyen said she is extremely grateful to the community for supporting the cause and to Regina as a whole, but raising $10,000 was just the start.
“It’s only the beginning. The job’s not done. We have so much more work to do, and this is just the first year we are running this campaign, and it’s going to be running for years to come and we are going to raise a lot more money,” Nguyen said.
