The Regina Thunder can lock up first place in the PFC standings on Sunday afternoon when they meet the Colts in Calgary.
Regina is in first place with a 6-0 record, are coming off a come from behind win in Winnipeg. This week on the SportsCage, head coach joined Sean Kleisinger to discuss the Thunder current situation. McAuley believes that his team is never out of a game, depending on the score.
“Our guys know that they’re still in it no matter if they’re down 21 or 15. ”
A win today would mean the path for a national championship will be pretty clear for the Thunder, with the PFC champion hosting the national championship, the Thunder would be playing at home for the entire playoffs. McAuley says it’s important for his team not to get ahead of themselves.
“I think we learned our lesson last season.” He added. “We got to focus on each week, we got to focus on Calgary, make sure we’re in first place for the rest of the season.”
McAuley pointed out that all of the teams making the PFC should be very competitive and there is a lot that is yet to be determined in the final league standings.
Looking ahead, the Thunder head coach would like to get his backup players some action over the next couple of weeks if they are able to do so.
“First we have to get ourselves in that position.” McAuley also noted that the Thunder must have some trust in the next man up, so it’s possible the reserves could see some extra playing time over the next couple of weeks before the playoffs.
Kickoff for today’s Thunder and Colts game is 1:00 in Calgary. All of the PFC teams will have the Thanksgiving weekend off before the final weekend of the season where the Thunder host the Edmonton Huskies on October 16 at Leibel Field.
